I write my first posting for the Dozo blog on the plane flying home to Washington, DC. As with previous reunions, there were some wonderful surprises, and it was great to see many old friends that in some cases I have not seen for thirty years – thank you to all of the organizers for their efforts in making this happen.

As we listed to Anita Baker (huh? early 1980s) during Scott Irgang’s welcoming remarks I really wanted to get up and grab the mike. What I was contemplating at that moment, and wanted to share with everyone is how much we all owe to each other. Oh I know that Dozo wasn’t Yaddo or the Algonquian Round Table, but it was also more than a hormonal incubator – in fact, it was a place to learn how to mature and develop a personal ethic towards living. It was at this moment, drinking cheap Chardonnay and talking with Beth Donnelly that I realized that it was not what we learned from the teachers (with the possible exception of Brodsky), but what we learned from each other – directly and indirectly -- and to so many I will always be grateful.
From Beth Donnelly: take risks as a way of growing; from Tom Cody: follow your passion and nurture creativity through living; from Rhonda Kellner: the import of zest, and a sense of humor; from Randi Grossack: the joys of irony and dark humor; from Leslie Dubin: loving friends with an open heart; from Kenny Funk: entreprenurialship; from Brian Sokoloff: embrace who you are and where you come from; from Vanessa Atkins: grace; from Doug Lange: strength of character; from Susan Paskoff always question authority; and from Jeff Norman cherish the moment in which you are living because it may well be a golden age – learn from it and savor it.

Here’s to the next gathering – hopefully not in an airport hotel.

Best, Charles “Charlie” Birnbaum

Next to getting elected president of the Cardozo Jazz workshop, coming in second in the "changed the least" contest was one of life's highlights. It just goes to show: it pays to have a good embalmer. It's funny how these things go: it was great seeing everyone who was there (and to be missing those who couldn't make it) whom I first met at Cardozo. But there were also those there whom I first met in I.S. 74. And there were those who were there (the great Kenny Funk, the great Doug Lange, and the great and accomplished Charles Birnbaum) with whom I go back to kindergarten. I am so grateful my life crossed -- and continues to cross -- with such people. A true blessing. Now, back to the mundane... what the hell is wrong with Aaron Heilman????

Matt, I think the time stamp's off by an hour, I got
home at 12:40 last nite. And, no, no afterparty
for me at the Raccoon, I had to be at work at 7:30am
this morning. Just got home from work a coupla
minutes ago.

And, once again, a big thanks to the Reunion Committee,
you did a great job.

    04th May 2008 - 01:44:38 PM
2220 : Ches
Hi Gang - Had a great time last night catching up with alot of you; but certainly missed those who could not attend. For all who would like to keep in touch, no need to wait, you now know where to find me. Beth D., I don't think we knew each other back in H.S.; you certainly looked alive to me! Most of all special thanks to the reunion committee for putting this 30th together.

2217 : Scott Irgang
It was really fun to see some of you 5 years later and to see others who never made it to a previous reunion. It was a (surprisingly) relaxing, low-key and wonderful night. No attitude or posing. Old friendships were re-ignited and the memories flowed like the oil off of a post Sing-rehearsal burger at Seville Diner.

I also wanted to thank my Reunion committee partners, Kenny, Rachel and Jed for their great work.

I sensed that a good time was had by all.

Be well.

Only 9 years and 364 days to go until the next one...

    04th May 2008 - 01:20:54 AM
2216 : marc mandel

2215 : Jeff Noreman
Well, Selby, you beat me. It was great seeing all of you again tonight (especially Beth Donnelly, who looks really good for someone who supposedly passed on). I hope our paths cross again in less than 10 years. Health and happiness to all of you.

    03rd May 2008 - 11:43:55 PM
2214 : Selby
Wow, I got to be the first post-reunion post
here. For those of you who were there, it was
great to see ya'll. And for those who weren't,
you missed a great time.

2213 : Alyssa Goldfarb
Sorry I won't make it to the reunion. Hope you all have a great time!

I am planning to be in NY at the end of June to visit family, so please email me if anyone wants to get together then.

    02nd May 2008 - 07:05:15 PM
2212 : rachel
the kids are watching Nick, (what has this world come to,) Kevin is out at the Yankees game (I have a mixed marriage - having grown up, of course, a Mets fan). No idea who Shmuckatelli is, from earlier postings - but I think if we are channeling the 70's - what you are requesting would be "streaking."

See you all tomorrow night - just another classy evening at the LaGuardia Crown Plaza. Anyone up for a piece of cheesecake at The Seville afterwards??? :-)

    02nd May 2008 - 07:58:59 AM
2211 : Steve Gross
I am sorry I will not be able to see all of you. Is there any type of gathering happening after the reunion somewhere? After midnight or last time a bunch of us got together the following week in Bayside.
Have a great time !!!!!!!!

Ken is the class of '78 rally 1,162 strong?? seems like a lot. that would mean all grades would add up to something like 4.5k?? can the school even hold that many students?
just wondering.

OK.. One last time.. Final reminder.. If you're thinking about going to the reunion... GO... GO, MAN, GO... Go like you've never gone before.. Buy your ticket online or just show up at the door.. this is it... The Greatest 30-year Reunion of all time...

CARDOZO HS CLASS OF 1978 REUNION
Saturday, May 3, 2008
7pm-Midnight
Crowne Plaza, La Guardia

Also, if you're thinking about going to McSorley's Ale House on Friday (15 East 7th, Midnight-1, Back Room), please email me so I can get an idea of who's going..

Just a word about McSorley's.. I've been going there with friends over the last few years and thought it would be fun to invite the Cardozo 78 crowd.. Realistically, this may not work because it's a bit tight in the back room and may not be large enough if all 1,162 of us happen to show up.. If, for some reason, you can't get in, or it's too crazy, or just isn't dealable (drinking, tipping mandatory in back room), you can always go right down the block to JIMMY'S (43 East 7th St., downstairs).. It's way cool, much more accomodating, has a great beer selection AND we always wind up there after McSorley's closes at 1am..

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday..

Howie: I would stump up more than a round, but, we are coming in on the 3rd and will miss the exciting pre-reunion at mcsorley's (heavy sigh). If I can persuade you to come to the city on another night, you have a deal! You can sing God save the Queen only if it is the sex pistols version; but I would much rather hear you sing the Cramps version of surfing bird.

    29th April 2008 - 01:19:32 PM
2202 : H2
We can listen to Sid and Johnny aka The Pistols. I hear they did a hot hot version of Hava Negelia in 1978 at the Palladium. After that, Patti Smith will be singing Dylan. Which is actually better than Dylan singing Dylan.

Kenny, I'm with Susan, list of attendees please.

Susan, With the £ being 2:1 on the $, are you buying a round at McSorley's? We'll promise not to sing G-d Save the Queen. H2

    29th April 2008 - 12:03:15 PM
2201 : susan
what no paramedics on standby? What is this world coming to? You forgot to say "addle-brained" in the description. I'm still not listening to Boston for the whole night!

Actually, Howie had a good question (as usual). Is there a list of those who are coming to this thing. I'm with Selby and Howie on the music, do we need to bring punk and psychobilly to get thought this night?

    28th April 2008 - 11:34:55 PM
2198 : Mitch Hochman
Is anyone going to Mcsorley Friday night May 2nd? Say about 11pm? I live on East 5th Street @ Cooper Square.

    28th April 2008 - 06:37:18 PM
2197 : H2
Let me know when you get to Kraftwerk, I'm in.

    28th April 2008 - 04:27:10 PM
2196 : Selby
The longest I could possibly stand to listen to
a Techno remix of "Right Back Where We Started From"
is 1 hour. After that we have to change it over to
a Bluegrass remix of the Village Peoples "YMCA", or
possibly even a Swedish Death Metal version of
The Captain and Tenniles "Love Will Keep Us Together".
Either will suffice.

    28th April 2008 - 03:50:33 PM
2195 : KF
Hey, Even if it's just me and Neil Selby, sittin around, talkin about old times.. and listening to the extended 4 hour techno remix of Maxine Nightingale's "Right Back Where We Started From".. it's still going to be a rockin good time..

    28th April 2008 - 12:33:14 PM
2194 : H2
Kenny,
In that case it’s probably just going to be you solo. As Neil has previously indicated, meandering GD jams are a waste of time and those are my sentiments exactly when it comes to Trey and co.
H2

    28th April 2008 - 11:58:36 AM
2193 : Kenny
Hey Howie, So far it looks like it's just me and you.. but don't worry, I asked the dj to spin 5 hours of live Grateful Dead and Phish shows..

    28th April 2008 - 09:53:30 AM
2192 : H2

Kenny,
How many alum do we have registered to attend our 30th reunion? The 25th seems to have had more of a critcal mass, more of an interest?

    07th March 2008 - 04:37:06 PM
2153 : Reunion Man
Just a reminder, tickets for the Reunion must be purchased (and Bio Book info sent in) by April 4th, otherwise the price goes up $10 bucks...

    04th March 2008 - 10:06:30 AM
2152 : Reunion Committee
Hi Neil, Good question... According to Kisha Cravin, Committee Relations Manager at Great Reunions, "There is usually a small number of dinners that can purchased at the door at the higher rate. Cash only at the door but this dependent on the amount of pre-paid dinners so it is really encouraged that everyone pay ahead of time."
You could also try walking in backwards and pretend that you are leaving.. that usually works..

    02nd March 2008 - 05:07:01 PM
2151 : Selby
Question for the reunion committee. Will it be possible to
buy a ticket right up to the last minute, or maybe even
at the door?

The reason I ask is that I just got a new job, and won't
know what shifts/days I'll be working till late April.
And since I can get shifts 24/7/365 I might have to work
the shift during the reunion. Or mabye not, its still up
in the air.

    27th February 2008 - 09:41:39 PM
2150 : marc mandel
hi everyone. looking forward to seeing all of you in may (for those of you who are attending). have you played cardozo78 trivia? it's easy and fun.....all you have to do, is, as you see the pictures flashing in the top right corner, how many can you name out loud? that's the 1st part, the other is, why or how do you remember them, other than the obvious, which was graduating with them. ciao for now.

    27th February 2008 - 08:18:51 PM
2149 : Scott Irgang
Wow! Hard to believe that we are up to the 30th reunion!
I WILL DEFINITELY BE THERE and hope to see all of you there as well. 30 years!
Lots of miles on the tread.
But nothing better than those days of Boston on the radio, lunches at Sizzler, dinners at Seville, parties in Douglaston Manor, Bernie Cohen, Sing rehearsals, Arista meetings, Ben Michelson and Eve Edwards telling me that I was the only man in her life. Ah!
The good 'ol days.

How sweet to go back in time, for just one more night.

See you there.

2148 : rachel Dahill-Fuchel
Hi Richard - great to think we'l be seeing you and Tema in a couple of months. It's an honor that you remember us - and fondly! Let's try to get in touch with peter drew, as well - i know he got married not long ago and lives on upper east side - right across the park from me.

Best wishes to all of you on the 30th Reunion.

To answer Mike's question, Richard Brodsky and his wife Tema Brodsky will be attending the 40th Anniversary of the school as soon as we know when and where it will be held.

Tell all of you friends about it.

Pretty quiet around here lately... I guess everyone must be thinking about which dressing to order with their house salads. Personally, I'd go with the 1,000 Island... the Ranch was a little too creamy last time...

Is it possible that Cara thought Yehoshua was born at Mr. Granger's?

    24th December 2007 - 02:44:20 PM

As we are now approaching Christmas Eve it brings to mind an experience in Mr. Brodsky's English Class. We had just finished reading "The Grapes Of Wrath" and of course an exam was given to make sure the class had actually read the novel. Brodsky starts reading the answer given by one of us. The answer states: Ros'asharron (spelling?) giving birth to a stillborn baby in the farmhouse was symbolic of Jesus Christ being born in a GRANGER! Brodsky then looks at Cara Levine and in his sarcastic tone tells her "It's a manger you idiot, a manger!" Cara replies that due to her being Jewish she didn't know the difference! Craig Fenton-who was sitting right in front of me-turns to look at me and almost proceeds to fall out of his chair. As for me, I have listened to Franklin Ajaye, George Carlin, Chris Rock, LaWanda Page, and even Cheech and Chong trying to sneak into a drive-in movie, but to this day I have never come as close to needing oxygen pumped into my lungs after laughing so hard.
