    11th September 2008 - 05:22:50 AM
2341 : Witlin
Kenny when you were busing tables at the deli did u have to wear that cheesy uniform that all the old men wore who worked in the deli's around queens. You know the vest and tuxedo pants? Bruce if i remember correctly didn't you sell your bicycle for a slice of pizza outside joe's on 73rd?

    10th September 2008 - 11:09:06 PM

    10th September 2008 - 10:39:23 PM
2339 : Kenny Funk
Great to see everyone posting again.. keep the memories coming.. speaking of Utopia... you can still see the cheesy diamond-shaped vinyl letters that spell out "UTOPIA LANES" on the door (Union and 188th).. It probably hasn't been a bowling alley in 20 years and the 39˘ letters are still on the door... amazing... I also bussed tables at the Starlight Deli next door in the Summer of '76.. "Frampton Comes Alive", "Afternoon Delight", "Turn the Beat Around".. good times...

2335 : Witlin
Marc, i will be paying my respects to that hollowed ground also know as William A. Shea Municipal Stadium in two weeks. i have tickets to see mets play cubs. sad to see them tear down a perfectly good stadium and the source of much fun in my mis-spent youth. i cut many a dairy lee milk cartons to get in for free and sneak down to field level seats.
on another note chez, i will say hello to A. Gill the usher you terrorized for those many years if i see him.

Hi Guys,

If nothing else we gave ourselves wonderful memories that I wouldn't trade for anything. Our teachers may have another opinion about those times but you can't please everyone!

i also remember going after a few boys with a bat during a panther game !!!!!! speaking of panthers--is that joe markasis's son that plays major league baseball ?? and i def remember dancing on the stage at the meadows ! but b4 we danced on the stage at the meadows i do believe we went to blue bay diner---i think the words from the waitress were
" thanks" and one of us said "for what? " and the waitress said "FOR NUTHIN"

    04th September 2008 - 09:58:25 PM
2331 : Ches
Mark & Jeff,

Remember Utopia Bowling Alley, or Olympic Bowling Alley a/k/a "The Pits"? What about dancing on stage at the Meadows during the movie? How about every single teacher that we came into contact with?

ches and bruck, about 1000 stories come to my head but the time we went to north Carolina had to be some of the best ones. The fire and Freddie sleeping fully clothed with the pickle and the TV on and loud will go down in history.

    03rd September 2008 - 08:22:37 PM
2329 : Ches
Mark & Jeff,

How about when Birdie's wife was pregnant and we asked him if they would call the baby Robin if it was a girl

2328 : Ches
Hi Mark Mandell - I am a die hard Dolphin fan just like you. Don't worry about the season and let's enjoy one game at a time. It would be great to beat the Jet's (Just End The Season. Please say hi to my old friend Ronnie Karten. Is Mitchell Hart still in Bayside? Also, had dinner with Bruce on Friday at Donovan's and would like to get the two of you together next time. I hope things are going well for you.

Best regards,

Scott

Jeff Bruck & Mark Witlin,

I don't believe the things that we got away with(scratching my head)? People in Hollywood get paid alot of money for the things that we came up with naturally. Does anybody know what ever happened to Alan Levitt and Steven Ohmstead? Mark I can still here your laugh. Jeff what about the basketball pools?
I sure hope you guys are well.
Wishing you the kindest warmest regards,

Scott C.

If you mention free to Aaron he would break out in hives. Jeff, don't forget that I kind of gave Aaron fits also. Does anyone remember his monthly inventory? Aaron would ask questions like 6 time 1 quick and really need an answer. Remember Max the bum ( Hey you know me). Mark you gave everyone fits, but I gave Birdie fits and he just thought it was you.

Best,

Scott

    02nd September 2008 - 07:19:36 AM
2316 : mark witlin
Oh!, buy the way the EggCream will come in a large cup. Not that paper cone shit that Aaron liked to pawn off on everyone.

    02nd September 2008 - 07:17:20 AM
2315 : mark witlin
Ok, free eggcream from Aaron over at lamstons for the first person who correctly finishes this sentence. "why is Bruce biting his fingernails?"

Yes, we have ALL been bullied at one time or another as kids, myself included. there were your neighborhood bullies, school bullies, and even gangs. it wasn't fun back then getting beaten up, however, i feel mature enough, maybe even lucky now to look back and laugh about it. sooooooo, with that said, and now for ALL eyes to see::::

I think those of us who were around both of these guys back in the day know that Bruce was a 'tad slow' shall we say and that he was easily manipulated, and was on many occasions by Marc and others. Based on the 'hurt' i sense in Bruce's messages it suggests something 'other' then just being 13 years old. Every one of us growing up has been bullied or treated harshly by a 'friend' but we have all outgrown it and moved on. I sense Bruce's mistreatment might go a step further to where it still haunts him.

SORRY FOR ALL THE TYPO'S AND BORING YOU ALL WITH THIS DRAMA.

just a few quick add ons if i may. to mike, who ever you are...i hope now you have a better idea of the situations.
jeff bruck...."we were kids"!!!! glad to hear that you didn't get hit by the storms.

AND TO BRUCE......I WOULD LIKE TO THINK THAT ALMOST 35 PLUS YEARS LATER WE COULD FORGET ABOUT OUR "CHILDHOOD" GOOD OR BAD, SINCE WE ARE NOW ALL GROWN UP WITH KIDS OF OUR OWN. AS CRUEL AS I'M BEING ACCUSED OF BEING TOWARDS YOU, EVERYONE ALSO KNOWS THAT WE WERE THE "BEST OF FRIENDS" FOR A VERY VERY LONG TIME. YES, WE BOUGHT OUR 1ST 10 SPEED BIKES TOGETHER, REGISTERED THEM AND JOINED THE BIKE CLUB AT THE Y AND RODE TOGETHER. THEN THERE WERE THE MANY TIMES AT JOHN PARKERS HOUSE HANGING OUT....HEBREW SCHOOL, WINTERS AT ALLEY POND PARK, YOUR DOG SABASTIAN RIPPINGTHE CRAP OUT OF MY 1ST DOLPHINS ACKET....THE LIST IS ENDLESS. BASICALLY, LLKING BACK ON THOSE YEARS AND REFLECTING ON THEM NOW AS I TYPE ABOUT THEM......WERE REALY COOL MEMORIES. IT'S JUST RALLY SAD THAT YOU HOLD SUCH A GRUDGE. YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE AND I WISH YOU THE BEST WHATEVER YOU DO AND WHERE EVER YOU ARE.

    26th August 2008 - 02:36:35 PM
2289 : marc mandel
OK....I SEE THAT THERE NEEDS TO BE SOME CORRECTIONS HERE, ESPECIALLY FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW THE ENTIRE STORY. 1ST...BRUCE, YOU ARE ABOUT TO BE PUBLICALLY EMBARRASED, THERE IS YOU FAIR WARNING. YES, THERE IS SOME "PARTIAL" TRUTH. I WAS HARSH, HOWEVER....MAYBE IT WAS BECAUSE WHEN BRUCE GOT CAUGHT STEALNG AN ENTIRE SHELF OF CANDY AT RED ARROW AND GOT CAUGHT, HE TOLD HIS FATHER THA I THREATENED HIM SINCE HE WAS TO SCARED TO TAKE THE CONSEQUENCES AND WHEN HE SHOWED UP AT MY DOOR WITH HIS DAD AND FORCED TO TELL THE ACTUAL TRUTH....THAT WAS JUST THE BEGINNING OF THE CRAPR THIS TOTAL FOOL TRIED TO "UNSUCCESSFULY" PULL OFF. THEN THERE WAS THE TIME THAT HE WAS IN THE SERVICE AND I CALLED HIM ALL THE WAY IN "JAPAN" TO ATTEMPT TO MAKE AMENDS AND AS THE FOL THAT HE "STILL APPARENTLY IS" HE MADE SOME VERY HARSH DEROGATORY REMARKS. YEARS LATER, I ATTEMPTED ONLY 1 MORE TIME WHEN I HEARD THAT HE WAS IN FLORIDA THROUGH A MUTUAL FRIEND. I CALLED HIM AGAIN, AND ONCE AGAIN HE REPEATED HIS HARSH ARROGANCE AND IGNORANCE. I READ NOW THAT I SHOULD BE GLAD THAT I WASN'T THERE BECAUSE GOONESS KNOWS WHAT HE WOULD HAVE DONE. SOOOO, NOW BRUCE, YOU DISPLAY FOR AL EYES TO SEE JUST HOW PATHETIC YOU REALLY ARE. YOU HAVE NEVER GROWN UP NOR DO I THINK YOU EVER WILL. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAE ACCUSED ME OF BEING CRUEL TO HIM...."WE WERE 13"!!!.....""""KIDS, BEING KIDS""""". THERE ARE SOOOOOOO MANY MORE STORIES ABOUT YOU BRUCE THAT I COULD SHARE WITH HE ENTIRE GRADUATING CLASS OF 78 BUT I THINK THAT YOU GRACIOUSLY TOOK CARE OF THAT YOURSELF. SO THANKS FOR SAVING ME THE EFFORT. BRUCE COOPERSTEIN, RGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT ME BACK THEN AND THINK OF ME NOW, I ONLY WISH YOU THE BEST.

you know each other for years, maybe decades. You live close to each other, but for old silly reasons you don't talk. I'm at exit 78 with my family.
Man, it was great to see you Eric Diamond, you look great and your refreshing
personality made me long for days of old. Our third musketeer Glen Bock is still MIA

Hey Mike, Just the usual stuff.. a few guys sittin' around drinkin' beer.. talkin' old Cardozo '78 stories... like getting caught by Mr. Birdie and dragged into DiPadova's office.. or social studies with larger-than-life off the friggin' planet Dave Feldman... or the dry, cool, sarcastic wit of Spanish teacher Ms. Moscatelli.. or English with Joe Rottino... or "Once Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest with Richard Brodsky... or "A Clockwork Orange" with Peter Drew... or the "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" Class Trip he took us on... How the hell did he get away with that one?... Mike, why don't you join us at McSorley's one night.. I'm sure you have a few Cardozo '78 stories you could add..

I write my first posting for the Dozo blog on the plane flying home to Washington, DC. As with previous reunions, there were some wonderful surprises, and it was great to see many old friends that in some cases I have not seen for thirty years – thank you to all of the organizers for their efforts in making this happen.

As we listed to Anita Baker (huh? early 1980s) during Scott Irgang’s welcoming remarks I really wanted to get up and grab the mike. What I was contemplating at that moment, and wanted to share with everyone is how much we all owe to each other. Oh I know that Dozo wasn’t Yaddo or the Algonquian Round Table, but it was also more than a hormonal incubator – in fact, it was a place to learn how to mature and develop a personal ethic towards living. It was at this moment, drinking cheap Chardonnay and talking with Beth Donnelly that I realized that it was not what we learned from the teachers (with the possible exception of Brodsky), but what we learned from each other – directly and indirectly -- and to so many I will always be grateful.
From Beth Donnelly: take risks as a way of growing; from Tom Cody: follow your passion and nurture creativity through living; from Rhonda Kellner: the import of zest, and a sense of humor; from Randi Grossack: the joys of irony and dark humor; from Leslie Dubin: loving friends with an open heart; from Kenny Funk: entreprenurialship; from Brian Sokoloff: embrace who you are and where you come from; from Vanessa Atkins: grace; from Doug Lange: strength of character; from Susan Paskoff always question authority; and from Jeff Norman cherish the moment in which you are living because it may well be a golden age – learn from it and savor it.

Here’s to the next gathering – hopefully not in an airport hotel.

Best, Charles “Charlie” Birnbaum

Next to getting elected president of the Cardozo Jazz workshop, coming in second in the "changed the least" contest was one of life's highlights. It just goes to show: it pays to have a good embalmer. It's funny how these things go: it was great seeing everyone who was there (and to be missing those who couldn't make it) whom I first met at Cardozo. But there were also those there whom I first met in I.S. 74. And there were those who were there (the great Kenny Funk, the great Doug Lange, and the great and accomplished Charles Birnbaum) with whom I go back to kindergarten. I am so grateful my life crossed -- and continues to cross -- with such people. A true blessing. Now, back to the mundane... what the hell is wrong with Aaron Heilman????

It was really fun to see some of you 5 years later and to see others who never made it to a previous reunion. It was a (surprisingly) relaxing, low-key and wonderful night. No attitude or posing. Old friendships were re-ignited and the memories flowed like the oil off of a post Sing-rehearsal burger at Seville Diner.

I also wanted to thank my Reunion committee partners, Kenny, Rachel and Jed for their great work.

I sensed that a good time was had by all.

Be well.

Only 9 years and 364 days to go until the next one...

the kids are watching Nick, (what has this world come to,) Kevin is out at the Yankees game (I have a mixed marriage - having grown up, of course, a Mets fan). No idea who Shmuckatelli is, from earlier postings - but I think if we are channeling the 70's - what you are requesting would be "streaking."

See you all tomorrow night - just another classy evening at the LaGuardia Crown Plaza. Anyone up for a piece of cheesecake at The Seville afterwards??? :-)

I am sorry I will not be able to see all of you. Is there any type of gathering happening after the reunion somewhere? After midnight or last time a bunch of us got together the following week in Bayside.

CARDOZO HS CLASS OF 1978 REUNION

Also, if you're thinking about going to McSorley's Ale House on Friday (15 East 7th, Midnight-1, Back Room), please email me so I can get an idea of who's going..

Just a word about McSorley's.. I've been going there with friends over the last few years and thought it would be fun to invite the Cardozo 78 crowd.. Realistically, this may not work because it's a bit tight in the back room and may not be large enough if all 1,162 of us happen to show up.. If, for some reason, you can't get in, or it's too crazy, or just isn't dealable (drinking, tipping mandatory in back room), you can always go right down the block to JIMMY'S (43 East 7th St., downstairs).. It's way cool, much more accomodating, has a great beer selection AND we always wind up there after McSorley's closes at 1am..

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday..

Unfortunately I will not be attending the reunion. I'll be there in spirit only. We're celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary this weekend and made other plans long ago. Everyone have fun. Send some pics.
